Intellectual Property

Using and enforcing your design

You can decide how to use and enforce your registered design.

Using

Licensing

You can give someone else permission to use your registered design by granting them a licence.

Mortgaging

You can use your registered design as security for a loan. The mortgagor has a legal right in your design until you repay the loan.

Marketing

You may want to involve others to help exploit, develop or market your design. We do not give direct advice on this, but help is available.

Enforcing

Show it's registered

There is no official symbol to show that a design is registered. But you can display the design number on the product once it is registered.

Abroad

A United Kingdom (UK) design registration will only protect you in the UK  and some overseas territories, so make sure you are protected everywhere you want to trade.

Resolving disputes

We always encourage parties who are in dispute to resolve their differences before seeking a judgment by us.

Certified Copies

We will supply a copy of a design or design application, upon request and payment of a fee.
