G8

At Gleneagles in July 2005 the statement "Reducing IPR Piracy and Counterfeiting through more effective enforcement” was agreed. The statement set out various steps for G8 countries to take to address the substantial global trade in pirated and counterfeit goods. It also said that a meeting of experts would be convened to lay out a work plan to implement these steps and to review progress under future G8 presidencies,

Since the first meeting of G8 intellectual property rights (IPR) experts in 2005, five project proposals have been drafted and presented as a joint United Kingdom/Russian paper. These were discussed and agreed in March 2006 under the Russian G8 presidency. These projects will be taken forward in co-operation with the G8 Lyon/Roma Anticrime and Terrorism Group, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, World Trade Organisation, World Intellectual Property Organisation, World Customs Organisation and at the October 2006 meeting of the G8 IPR experts.
